Beyond torture claims, there’s the tempting
OPINION BY : GHK LALL November 2026
The Sunday Kiskadee Watch headline blared: Opp Leader tortured in jail. Per his sister. I received a much-traveled audio. It alleges the same horror. If this claim of torture holds one speck of truth, one speck only, then what would the PPP Govt not deal in next? The outlook is grim. I understand a little more, the anxieties that stalk, the fears that multiply in the minds of ordinary Guyanese. For if an Opp Leader can be tortured, then what about their existence? It could be of no consequence, from the perspective of the PPP Govt.
Read and heard and seen before. A young prisoner who had his genitals lit afire in Leonora. In Pres Ali’s birthplace of all places, there was that place of horror. A person of interest, usually Black, running away, but still shot in the back. Another with his hands upraised, only for the bullets to fly and find a funeral home for his body.
To complete the circle when these official crimes are committed, there’s coverup and careful condoning by the government’s State machinery, plus its army of social media headbangers. Anonymous guerrilla fighters serve as their best label. Well-armed. Well-protected.
Guyanese with some thinking power left under their hats should have a clear idea of where this public service circular is heading. Considering those tortures and ghastly affairs under its belt and as part of its criminal history, what would the PPP (as a government and as a party) not do? Where could it go next? What would not be off-limits? What is not beyond consideration? Because it’s so criminal. So detestably unbecoming of clean governance and credible national leadership. Some potential samples are placed before the Guyanese public.
It wouldn’t take much from the PPP Govt to arrange the removal of a political/electoral threat. More crudely, order an execution and call it national security priorities. It wouldn’t be past the PPP Govt to orchestrate through one of its many criminal coconspirators to stage an accident to get rid of those considered to be opponents. To end those whose existence is a thorn to a government and leadership, because of what they expose. Because of how they make leaders look like pathological liars. It wouldn’t be past the PPP Govt to have a Molotov cocktail hurled at foes. The PPP recruited an old PNC hand who drove fear into Indo-Guyanese with many Molotov cocktail missions. What does that say? How low would the PPP Govt not go? How high would the PPP Govt not put some folks, then protect them?
With all of these past criminal engagements of the PPP Govt as precedents, it’s not surprising that the claims of Mohamed being tortured surface. And, if that could be inflicted on the Opp Leader during a royal visit, there’s a high probability that what was identified above could happen, now that he’s gone. If not even the discipline, a short sabbatical of restraint, in that royal interlude, then the prospects for more criminal brutalities on Guyanese at the hands of their government loom large. The odds increase.
The PPP Govt has its criminal assets. Recall their honored name: crimefighters. It turned out that they doubled as serial criminals. Some were in uniforms; new men wear the same old uniform. Another PPP Govt criminal asset is the private sector. The name given to that section of crimefighting was phantom squad. Old assets, long proven, now dormant, but aware of the stakes and their role to maintain the status quo. The tragic irony is that the allegedly tortured Opp Leader may have more than normal familiarity with phantom squads and such secret criminal operations. Foreknowledge is forewarned. It mandates being well-armored. Doesn’t shield in prison, seemingly.
My God! I can’t believe that for truth and justice, this is my role, this environment my companion. Weigh and measure that question, fellow Guyanese. If torture of a national leader is resorted to, with the slickness of no bumps, bruises, or broken bones, what could be next, and who? God be with Guyana. I sense that, he gave up.
